  34. The field rate timing thing (2 fields/frame @ 30 fps) is
  35. correct...however: NTSC consists of 525 lines of vertical resolution,
  36. interlaced. 480 of those are picture lines. The rest are vertical
  37. interval and used for other things. The proper NTSC "field" rate is two
  38. fields of 262.5 lines, interlaced.

  52. Color spaces are a completely different question, but: NTSC has a
  53. smaller color space than 24-bit.  Saturation _and_ luminance both can
  54. exceed permissible levels, crossing into the "guard band" and causing
  55. noise in the audio portion of the signal (NB: This is in an "on-air"
  56. picture).  CCIR-601 (aka D-1 video) has a color depth that is larger
  57. than 24-bit and can contain colors that would exist in "negative" color
  58. space in NTSC.  Since they are not meaningful, that portion of the D-1
  59. signal is essentially not useful for picture purposes.

  67. NTSC = 525 lines _vertical_ resolution minus 45 lines vertical interval
  68. for a total of 480.  The PVR's output is actually 476 lines (recalling
  69. from a post by the guy at UW-Stout - help me out here!), but close
  70. enough for "rock & roll" if not for PBS and maybe not the FCC.

  72. 720 lines of _horizontal_ resolution is about 2X the transmissible video
  73. resolution.  If you think that's wasted, ask yourself this: WHy does a
  74. 3-CCD camera rated at 700 lines look better than a single-chip rated at
  75. 400 lines if they are both recording to VHS at about 320 lines?  Because
  76. the higher quality signal is still going to record a better image to the
  77. same format.

  79. That's why.  Your Lightwave stuff (getting on topic here for the
  80. bandwidth police) is going to look better at full NTSC resolution even
  81. if it can't be recorded and transmitted at that resolution.

  84. figures out I will, but you'll all be pestering me to take it to
  85. email by that time, now, won't you?
